Classes To Resume Monday, Oct. 29

Due to the wildfires, San Diego State University has cancelled classes and postponed or cancelled events scheduled through the weekend. Exceptions:WPA, ACT, TOEFL & GRE exams will be held on Saturday. On-campus residence halls and essential support services such as food service and student health care will continue to operate as normal. The SDSU Library will re-open on Sunday at noon.

There is no present threat to the campus from the fires.

Normal campus operations and classes will resume on Monday, Oct. 29. Depending on weather conditions, outside air quality may not be ideal. Take necessary precautions - including staying indoors as much as possible - to minimize your exposure to smoky air. Keep windows closed. If necessary, consult a physician. A limited number of free respirator masks will be available for SDSU students, faculty and staff at Calpulli Center/Student Health Services and Physical Plant Work Control Office. Indoor air quality remains good to excellent.

If you are an SDSU faculty or staff member who has lost your home to the fire, or you want to report a colleague who has lost his/her home, e-mail Melanie Doyle, Center for Human Resources at: assistance [at] sdsu [dot] edu or call (619) 594-2873 (information will be kept confidential). While this is not an official evacuation site, and Red Cross services will not be available, SDSU is responding to the extraordinary circumstances and will do what's possible to assist those in need. A limited number of cots and sleeping bags are available. Food, shower and bathroom facilities are also being made available. SDSU is accepting donations only of blankets and cots. Food and beverage items are not needed.

Also, D-lot is available for students and employees from evacuated areas as a "no cite" location for those who need to store vehicles on a temporary basis.

SDSU Student Health Services (SHS) is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Due to the medical issues resulting from the wildfires, SHS has shifted the focus of its medical services to care primarily for students with urgent medical problems. SHS is rescheduling existing appointments for students with less urgent problems, including those in our specialty clinics such as Optometry, Dermatology and Orthopedics. Staff will still be available to care for any student with an acute medical problem such as asthma or other respiratory symptoms like cough, breathing problems, chest pain, etc. as well as other urgent issues like injuries. SHS can provide only first aid for faculty and staff, for example, for on-campus minor injuries. After hours, students may receive nursing advice by calling (888) 594-5281.

SDSU faculty and staff are encouraged to avail themselves of SDSU's Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which provides a variety of counseling services. EAP -- managed by PacifiCare Behavioral Health -- can be reached online at http://www.pbhi.com or call (800) 234-5465 for more information.

The Jennifer Lopez/Marc Anthony concert scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Cox Arena has been cancelled. Ticket refund information is forthcoming.

No decision has been made regarding the Aztecs/BYU football game scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27 at QUALCOMM Stadium.

All San Diego Hotels are FULL!

Bad news for evacuees. It looks like all San Diego hotels are at capacity and have no room for any more evacuees.

It looks like Qualcomm, the evacuation site has plenty of capacity. Also, SDSU Peterson gym will be opening up as a temporary evacuation center starting tomorrow.

The university has designated Peterson Gymnasium – located on the west side of campus on 55th Street – as a temporary shelter for students, faculty and staff and their families displaced by the fires. While this is not an official evacuation site, and Red Cross services will not be available, SDSU is responding to the extraordinary circumstances and will do what’s possible to assist those in need. SDSU will attempt to provide bedding and sleeping bags – very limited cots will be available tonight. Food and shower and bathroom facilities are also available.

Air conditioning systems have been reset to circulate air and provide the best possible air quality. SDSU will continue to provide services for on-campus residents including dining service.

Fire Storm 2007 Victims Fund

I have setup a fund to help the victims of this horrible tragedy! Please make a donation and help those who may now be without a home!

I have started off the fund by contributing $100 of my own money! Please join the effort! $100 many not seem like munch, but it is a lot for a starving college student such as my self. If I can make a donation so can you!

As of 1 p.m., San Diego State University will be canceling classes for the remainder of day. The campus is also being closed for all non-essential personnel (as determined by their supervisor).

However, to facilitate an orderly exit from campus parking structures, faculty and staff are encouraged to remain on campus, indoors, until 2 p.m.

There is no current threat to the campus from local wildfires but classes are being cancelled to minimize traffic on county streets and highways.

Those remaining on campus - including students in residence halls - are encouraged to stay indoors to minimize their exposure to smoke and dust in the air. SDSU health and safety officials are also monitoring air quality on both inside and outside buildings. Air conditioning systems have been reset to circulate air and provide the best possible air quality. SDSU will continue to provide services for on-campus residents including dining service. Fire Storm 2007

The recent news about the southern California fires is tragic and upsetting. There is no doubt that homes and lives will be ruined as a result. The fire is reported to be the wrost fire ever in California. It is my hope that all of you out there have a safe place to stay and are out of harms way. At this point in time I must ask myself: What can I do as an individual to help make a difference? Can I do anything as a student to help make this tragedy just a little more endurable for those affected?

I am not sure what the answer is or should be. So the following will be my attempt.

I, on behalf of the AITP student members, will setup a web page to help organize and communicate emergency information. We will gather this inofrmation from all avilalbe news sources and make it conveniently available in one place.
I will setup a fund to solict donations for the vicitims of this unfortunate event.

Thats all I can think of rignt now. If there is anything else that you or anyone else thinks can be done to help let me know by posting a comment below! If you are intrested in helping, register on our webpage and contact me so that you can help contribute to the effort!
